The availability of inverse planning and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) technology opened the possibility of designing new treatment strategies with superior dose distributions, namely tighter treatment margins and therefore better organ sparing. Recently Mohan et al.,1 and Wu et al.,2 have suggested a »simultaneous integrated boost« (SIB) IMRT approach to head and neck Radiol Oncol 2003; 37(2): 115-26.
